A lady that I did not like at all - someone I have sometimes referred to as "the wicked witch of the East" - once told me something she heard from a mutual acquaintance, a man that I liked somewhat, a man that I respected:

"There are three things they can't take from me: my memories, my fantasies, and this present moment."

Headline: Harper Loses Fifth Caucus Member

Dean Del Mastro charged with Elections Act violations, no longer in Conservative caucus

" Del Mastro is the second Conservative MP to leave caucus. Former Peter Penashue left caucus, resigned his seat and then ran in a byelection earlier this year over ineligible campaign expenses. Liberal Yvonne Jones won the byelection.

Senators Mike Duffy, Patrick Brazeau and Pamela Wallin have also left the Conservative caucus over ineligible housing and travel expense claims."

Justice officials propose courts on Parliament Hill to streamline prosecution of crooked Conservative Party members.

Good Luck, Unifor

Murray Dobbin has it right.

Murray says, "One of the strongest motivating factors behind Unifor, and a wide variety of other initiatives being undertaken, is the desire to rid the country of the Harper government in 2015. If that is indeed a key objective - and it must be - then perhaps the most important element of this social unionism needs to be to focus as much attention on the economy as possible, to engage the media, the public and political parties in a broad discussion about the catastrophic economic policies of the Harper government."
And I agree.

But it ain't gonna be easy.

This last summer I had the opportunity to discuss politics with some folks who still love Stephen Harper.

I asked them if they would fire an employee who stole from them, lied to them, disrespected them to their face, and dragged their company name through the mud.

They told me that they would maintain this employee, if the only alternatives were a socialist or a Trudeau.

Go figure.

O...M...G...!!! Even HARVEST MOON???

Slash end sarcasm font.

I'm asking you now ... PLEADING with you now ... to join me in prayer for the poor suffering children in Fort MacMurray who have had Neil Young ripped from their tender bosoms.

Or in prayer for Neil Young, beset upon and beseiged by the godless harperites of Sodom Fort MacMurray.

I'm sure we can all agree that godless naysayers must be stamped out forthwith, whoever or whatever they may be.

Okay, for sure, NOW slash end sarcasm font.

ETA this:

Dear Neil,

You know I love you, man. And I am fiercely proud of the fact that you are a Canadian boy, and that you speak up when it comes to Canadian and international issues.

But WTF, man?

What's with the American flag in the background?

Kinda takes the steam our of your message, no?

So what is it, man? The environment, or record sales?

Pick one.

Forty Years On

Forty years ago, on September 11, 1973, a military coup toppled the democratic socialist government of Chile. President Salvador Allende killed himself as troops attacked the presidential palace. General Augusto Pinochet - with the backing of the CIA - rounded up students, trade unionists and intellectuals. In the aftermath of the coup, a quarter of a million people were detained for their political beliefs. 3000 were killed or disappeared. Many more were tortured. Thousands were desperately clamouring to get out of the country to safety.

But at first, Canada turned a cold shoulder to the would-be refugees. That seeming indifference galvanized a group of people into action; among them students, church leaders, a handful of courageous civil servants and a whistle-blower, whose defiant act may have finally forced the door open.

If it had not been for the pressure put on the government, Canada might well have rejected the 70,000 or so Chileans who came to us.

One of those Chileans who arrived is now my son-in-law, the father of my grandchildren, and his mother and father I count among my dearest friends.

Ironically, our present government would dearly love to turn the clock back to Pierre Trudeau's time, when Canada was not a welcoming place for good people fleeing fascism.

And guess what? I'm not exactly impartial, here. I have skin in the game. Truly.

(ETA: Anyone who thinks that politics does not affect his/her life is ignorant. Truly!).
