pacify it with cool thoughts.”

For the Bird Singing before Dawn
Kim Stafford
Some people presume to be hopeful
when there is no evidence for hope,
to be happy when there is no cause.
Let me say now, I’m with them.
In deep darkness on a cold twig
in a dangerous world, one first
little fluff lets out a peep, a warble,
a song—and in a little while, behold:
the first glimmer comes, then a glow
filters through the misty trees,
then the bold sun rises, then
everyone starts bustling about.
And that first crazy optimist, can we
forgive her for thinking, dawn by dawn,
“Hey, I made that happen!
And oh, life is so fine.”

How To Apologize
Express sorrow (I'm sorry)
Own guilt (I was wrong)
Name specific wrongs (I did X)
Name impact (I hurt you)
No IFS (sorry if I)
Don't blameshift/defend (but you)
No passive voice (sorry you were offended)
Make amends (what can I do)

One-hit wonder
In September 1992, the band Blind Melon released their
self-titled debut
album. The record was mostly ignored until a music video for the song
“No
Rain,” featuring a girl in glasses dressed as a bumblebee, went
berserk on
MTV. The song rocketed up the Billboard Hot 100 charts. But that was
the
last time the band ever struck gold. Two decades later, Rolling Stone
named
“No Rain” one of the biggest one-hit wonders of all time.

Some history
In the 1600s, a man who worked for Queen Elizabeth was
so embarrassed after an
accidental fart, that he left England for 7 years. When he returned,
the Queen greeted him
by saying "My Lord, I had forgot the Fart."
Another notable instance of flatulence in Elizabeth's court (there
were quite a few) runs
thusly: an archbishop lets one rip, and in a panic begins to cough and
drag a foot across
the carpet. Elizabeth responds "My lord, you needn't find a rhyme"

QOTD
Response to (drunk) Labour Foreign Secretary (1966-68)
George Brown at diplomatic
reception: "I shall not dance with you for three reasons. First
because you are drunk,
second, because this is not a waltz but the Peruvian national anthem
and third, because I
am not a beautiful lady in red; I am the Cardinal Bishop of Lima."
